Lonely Planet review for El Midi

This French-run café-restaurant is hard to go past for its fresh delights. Tartes, salads and a huge array of daily offerings can be enjoyed on the perfectly pretty plaza under brollies. Morning croissants available; the salad bar starts at 12.30pm and á la carte meals are served in the evenings.

    The Art of Lunch

    jetgirly recommends this,

When I am elderly and look back on my life, I believe my many lunches at El Midi will be some of my fondest memories. At the time of my visit to Mexico I was a young, carefree university student studying abroad, gorging on tacos de pata (hooves for the uninformed) and drinking too much cheap tequila. And then, one spring break I hit the road and found myself in Guanajuato, at a dimly-lit restaurant that consisted primarily of a counter and a single table. And on that table, oh, on that table, was the culinary experience that lifted me from my tequila- and hoof-induced haze.

But seriously, when you're sick of sketchy street food, tired of the buffet at Sanborns and you can't stomach the thought of another "nouveau Aztec" dish that is vaguely remniscient of a TGI Friday's Chipotle Special, get thee to El Midi. It's located in beautiful Plazuela San Fernando and the seating sprawls out of the restaurant onto the beautiful, shaded square. Inside the restaurant there is a simple buffet table piled high with favorites from the South of France, such as grilled and marinated vegetables of all varieties, quiches and salads. Many of the dishes are vegetarian, but some contain chicken or fish. All of the food is beautifully seasoned; there was a salad of apples and beets that was the talk of the hostel for a week, and I couldn't get enough of the garlic-marinated carrots. Wash it all down with a glass of agua fresca and you'll get to choose from a variety of flavours such as watermelon or papaya-pineapple. All food is sold by weight, and a large, filling lunch (with agua fresca) can easily be had for sixty or seventy pesos. El Midi is run by a woman who hails from the South of France, and she hasn't allowed her traditional cooking to be watered down by her new home country's cuisine. Truly, El Midi is one of the best, affordable restaurants in all of Mexico in my opinion. I would never, ever hesitate to recommend it as the top lunch spot in Guanajuato.
