Things to do in Tula

  1. Zona Arqueológica

The ruins of the main ceremonial center of Tula are perched on a hilltop, with views over rolling countryside (as well as less attractive nearby industry). These make up just a small part of the 16-sq-km site but are home to the most interesting remnants. It costs M$35 to use a video. At the time of research, the site was undergoing major excavation and was somewhat disheveled. If making a special trip, it may be worth calling ahead to check if the work is complete.

  2. Mana

This simple vegetarian restaurant serves a generous menu del día (menu of the day) that includes wholewheat bread, vegetable soup and a pitcher of natural fruit juice. There’s also a selection of veggie burgers, taquitos, quesadillas, soups and salads. Everything’s fresh, hearty and adamantly homemade.

  3. Sala de Orientación Guadalupe Mastache

The Sala de Orientación Guadalupe Mastache is a small museum named after one of the archaeologists who pioneered excavations at Zona Arqueológica. It includes large items taken from the site, including some huge caryatid feet, and a visual representation of how the site might have looked in its prime.

  4. Restaurant Casablanca

While admittedly rather sterile – even Sanbornsesque – Casablanca has a full menu of Mexican standards, a good buffet and wi-fi. Just off the zócalo, it’s one of the few sit-down options downtown, making it popular with business people and travelers alike.
