Gay/Lesbian entertainment in Mexico

  1. A

    Angels Club

Welcome to Guadalajara’s megaclub. Sure, it’s a gay venue, but chicks dig the mod acrylic tables, cool lounge, throwback beanbag room and the three dance floors blasting electronica, hip-hop and progressive rock, so heterosexual men should shed their inhibitions and mingle with the party people. Saturday nights get wild. Clubbers often leave for breakfast at around 5am and return for sun-drenched fun after hours.

    Backstage Theater-Cabaret

Cancún is well known for its lively gay and lesbian scene (though there's more for gay men than women), meaning there's plenty to do most nights. Backstage Theater-Cabaret features drag shows, strippers (male and female), fashion shows and musicals. Terrific ambience, joyful crowd.

Other venues include Karamba which is popular with cross-dressers and Picante which is more for talkers than dancers.

    Buttergold

Buttergold (aka Butterflies, aka El Butter), across the street from metro Salto del Agua, is an airplane-hangar-sized space that still manages to get densely packed. The funhouse features five bars, a snack bar and a big stage for elaborately choreographed drag shows. It’s fun for straights, too, as long as you don’t mind crowds, thick smoke and loud, loud music.

    Lipstick

At this large (capacity 950) club for an upscale 18-to-35 set, the fun goes on in three different settings: a subdued lower lounge for chilling out with friends; a video bar with adjacent dark room for close encounters; and an excellent upper terrace for all-out revelry. Thursday is girls’ night.

    KY60

Surprisingly, despite the men-wearing-construction-outfits Village People vibe, this is not a gay bar. It’s got good pool tables and is popular with guys and gals, gays and straights, locals and tourists, probably because of its reasonably priced beer, which seems to be a universal attraction.

  6. F

    Marrakech Salón

Crowded and steamy, you bet, but regulars wouldn’t have it any other way. Typical sights and sounds here include bare-chested bartenders, bar-top dancing and music ranging from 1980s pop to hip-shaking cumbias. A sign at the exit reads: ‘Thank you for your sexual preference.’

  7. G

    Wawis

Up above a seedy street scene, this mixed gay disco provides plenty of elbow room to get your salsa, cumbia and reggaeton grooves on, and the midnight show is always entertaining. Wawis is good-humoredly named after a Mexican slang term meaning fellatio.

    Picante

Set back from Avenida Tulum a few blocks north of Avenida Uxmal, this place isn’t as ‘spicy’ as its name suggests, but it is a longtime neighborhood gay bar. It often features movies shown at high volume until about 1am, when the dance music comes on.

    Tom’s Leather Bar

For those who dare to get medieval, Tom’s provides the props, with heraldic shields, crossed swords and candelabras highlighting a decidedly decadent decor. When the fat lady sings, the show’s about to begin.

    Los Balcones

This is one of the oldest gay haunts in town, with little upstairs balconies where hipsters like to be seen. Great cozy spaces and colorful walls accompany a DJ and nightly strippers.

    El Callejón de Ambiente

Gay, straight, bi and freaky all rip up the dance floor to '80s dance tunes, electronica, synth-pop and more at this club in the Plaza Fiesta Mall. Great mix of people.
