For car rentals, try Kanguro (817-78-78; Avila Camacho 135; from M$545). Hwy 140 to Puebla is narrow and winding until Perote; the Xalapa−Veracruz highway is very fast and smooth. Going to the northern Gulf coast, it’s quickest to go to Cardel, then north on Hwy 180; the inland road via Tlapacoyan is scenic but slow.
