I’m the site editor for lonelyplanet.com.
Before joining the online team, I was a travel-guide author and editor. I’ve worked on scores of books – covering every continent except Antarctica – and dreamed up countless ideas (both good and terrible!) for travellers.
I’ve lived in India, Pakistan, the USA (both coasts) and Indonesia, but I’m currently upside-down in Melbourne, Australia. I still hit the road whenever I can.
I’m recently back from an incredible trip to Western Australia – driving from Perth to Ningaloo Reef. One of the best wildlife trips I’ve ever taken.
With the recent arrival of a baby boy, my partner and I are planning our first ever “family” trip: to Hawaii. If we ever get any sleep again, that is!

Surely PSB's "King's Cross" has to make the list? And, not to be too trite, but "London Calling" needs to be up there too.

OK - i think a lot of you are missing a key point here. Sure, a decadent brunch with French toast and poached eggs and champagne and canteloupe and smoked herring may be nice once in a while, but could you eat it EVERY DAY? Asian breakfasts are a *daily* treat. In the West, you have to wait for the weekend, unless you want to weigh thousands of kilos.

Hiya - I've been an expat for much of my life! Born in India (best mountains), lived in Pakistan (best mutton curry), the States (best TV shows), Indonesia (best shadow puppets), and now Australia (best beaches).

Childhood nostalgia - or perfection?
I've been to a fair few beaches - from the rings around Bali, Oahu and Maui to Australia's coasts and Mediterranean waters. But when I was a wee 10-year-old, my family went to Bermuda. Never had I seen such gorgeous clear, blue waters. I don't know if this is childish imagining or whether Bermuda actually was the best beach I've ever been to.

Coloring books and puzzles were definitely the go for me as a three-year-old!

Lufthansa of old was great - and horrible. I remember when they gave me a "kid's meal" of mini-frankfurters. I ended up sick for the entire duration of the 20-hour flight (and I never got airsick as a kid!). On the plus side, the hostesses were incredibly nice to me and gave me a whole row to myself to lie down on. I've heard that their service has gone way downhill, though.

Hotel California. Everywhere.
Has anyone here ever had the experience of hearing a cover band play "Hotel California" EVERYWHERE THEY'VE EVER BEEN IN THE WORLD? I swear, i've heard this song covered in Jakarta, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Istanbul, Managua, Vancouver and Perth. I was in the middle of the Costa Rican rainforest, and someone was singing it while carrying water. What is with this? Am I the only one?

To expand on my post: I'm embarrassed by how much fun I had at this place. I expected to like it ironically; I loved it - from the old Kingsmen gear to the music studio. Too much fun.

East v West
For my money, the Asian content beats Europe and North America hands down when it comes to morning food. A beautiful cup of congee or a steaming bowl of pho are much more appealing than a traditional English fry-up or dry toast smeared with sugar. Can anyone here defend starting your day with grease and empty carbs?
