Praia Lopez Mendez on Ilha Grande in Brazil is my all time favourite beach. It has crystal clear water that is shallow for a long way out and is the best beach I have ever been to. Take your own food and drink as there is just a guy selling ice creams at the beach and there are no shops.
Ilha Grande is an island off the shore of Angra dos Reis, about 180kms from Rio de Janeiro. You can drive to Mangaratiba or Angra from Rio de Janeiro on BR 101. When you arrive at either town, ake a ferry to the island. Once you arrive at the port town on the island, you can take a boat to Praia Lopes Mendes.

Newquay, Cornwall, United Kingdom As an Aussie new to living in the UK, I did a road trip to Cornwall over Easter and was surprised to see the Brit's en masse putting on their full wetsuits with neoprene hats, gloves and head-warmers and go out surfing! Not really what happens at Bondi, but obviously a climate necessity! :-)
