commented on Hi all my husband and I are heading to India and Nepal for a 4 month trip and are starting the adventure in Kerala (Cochin>Alleppey>Munnar>Madurai>....). We land in Mumbai on Dec 30 (21:00) and plan to fly to Cochin the very next morning. Any recommendation of where we can stay for the night? We're looking for as close to budget as possible while staying within reasonable cleaniness. Are there decent options nearby the airport or do we have to head into town? Thanks in advance! in India
Best to stay close to the Airport in Santa Cruz, Andheri Area...Don't risk staying in Colaba etc. Mumbai traffic crawls on the best of days and I know so many people who've missed their flights. Search for hotels on: http://www.hotelsmumbaiindia.com/airport-hotels-mumbai.html

commented on Going to India Jan 2010 pretty much on my own. will take a tour for agra/jaidpur/ranthambhore. then on to darjeeling area for 5 days where I will be on my own. will this be a problem as a single white female? my indian friend from the area doesn't seem concerned about it. So can I just hire guides there to take me to mirik, kalimong, etc. ? in India
Cindy, I would not fear too much as people (including single white females) do travel to these cities alone often. However, being an Indian myself, I'd advise you to be as alert as any traveler should. There have been a few cases in the past reported in Goa etc. which don't make good reading. Please have your Indian friends reccomend a guide (if it is to be a travelling guide). Enjoy the cuisine, but be carefull of too much of spice. Don't do drugs - that ends up being the undoing of 'Hippy Travelers' to Manali / Darjeeling / Goa etc. And please BARGAIN every time you shop...or else you'd be paying 10-15 times the regular price!!! Enjoy 'Incredible' India!
