About me

Before landing on the Lonely Planet almost 15 years ago, Miles had lived, worked and trekked in eight countries, including Pakistan, Laos, Sudan, Iran and Egypt.

His first book (a Lonely Planet Shoestring title, the way so many of us authors cut our teeth) began in the Central African Republic. His travels then took him across a swath of Africa via Chad, Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea, all the way to tiny Djibouti on the Red Sea. His account of his near-disastrous first ever day of field research appears in Best of Lonely Planet Travel Writing.

For more than 20 years, he and his wife, Ingrid, have lived in a shoebox-size apartment in the old quarter of Valencia, on Spain’s Mediterranean coast. His Valencia Encounter, telling some but not quite all of the secrets to the city he loves, was, he’s proud to say, researched entirely on foot and in the saddle of his trusty town bike.

Nowadays, he writes mostly about Mediterranean lands, contributing to country and regional guides about France, Italy and Spain. Every three years seeks fresh superlatives to capture the staggering beauty of northern Norway as he reminds himself of his northern European roots.

Miles has written or contributed to more than 50 Lonely Planet books. He does webwork for Lonely Planet too and also writes for travel magazines and newspapers, both print and electronic.

Born in Sheffield, England, he speaks fluent French and Spanish, English with a South Yorkshire accent and tolerable if increasingly rusty Arabic.

Best travel tip: always pack dental floss. It can be your washing line, sewing thread, map distance calculator, fishing line and so much more. I’ve even used it to pick food fragments from between my molars.

Lonely Planet books authored include: Walking in Spain, France, Languedoc-Roussillon, Spain Travel, Europe on a Shoestring, Valencia Encounter, Norway, Western Europe, Corsica.
