About me
Traveller not tourist
We are a friendly, open minded, Australian family that loves traveling. We have seen much of Asia, some of Europe and a lot of our own country. I travel with my husband and our three sons. We are in our 30’s and have always loved to travel and backpack. We love camping and hiking too but at present we have had to modify our way of travel a little until our boys are a little bigger. My husband was originally a History and Politics graduate but has since entered the IT support field working for a university. I completed an education degree and spent the last four years before my first son was born as an ESL Lecturer. I enjoy volunteering and have been a volunteer home tutor (teaching English to isolated migrants) for 12 years. I have also volunteered as a Sciguide for Scitech (a not-for-profit organisation promoting general science in the community). Currently I am volunteering in a Womens Support Program for a charity Womens Health Clinic. We love to meet the locals as we feel this is one of the most important aspects of traveling! :) Maybe we shall meet you?

Just requesting wise advise on our future year out in 2012.
Our family plan to go on a years trip overseas in 2012 - purely for adventure and personal growth of all concerned. We plan to home school the children.
We are hoping to do a role reversal. That is, I will work full-time and hubby (who will get a years leave from work inc long service + leave without pay) will look after children and execute home schooling. It is important for the children that he will be available solely as primary carer.
Now, I am expected to earn enough to support the families basic needs plus wants ie we hope to travel the region we are in eg. if in europe make the occasional weekend trip out to nearby countries... on my future income.
Of course hubby wants me on a high income to facilitate all this. Probably the highest would be in a private language school - hot housing, etc. This doesn't really appeal to me.
Now, I do a lot of charity work so I want to make a difference. I mean I think I would find it difficult to work with a company who's only objective was to earn profits. I would like to help people and work with an organisation who has ethics and morals. I would find it conflicting to do otherwise.
Our ideal situation would be six months in Asia eg South Korea and six months in Europe eg Poland? (Since we have been to both these places before). Although we are open to almost anything and if we had to choose a year appointment it would be in Europe.
Taking our children with us there would be other considerations as well. I wouldn't consider at this age taking them to a developing country or somewhere similar. They would need a country that is secure, with good hospital facilities and some modern facilities eg internet access, entertainment, access to community events, playgrounds, etc.
So, in your opinion, would it be possible to achieve a balance and how would I go about it?
Is it possible that I could work as a volunteer including accommodation for my family plus a stipend large enough for their basics plus a few extras. Could you give me an example of a possibility in this scenario? (I have considered that I may be able to make a little extra money by privately tutoring students eg two nights a week?)
Or would it be best to simply work for an morally based organisation eg School. etc. What do you suggest?9 months ago -

Good advise Ruth. I will consider this. We are flexible, so maybe this will be the way to go. Newdawn
