Just to add to #4: there are local buses from Kuala Besut (where the ferries from the Perhentians dock) to Kuala Terengganu.

The cable car ride is very good, but otherwise it's a terrible place, a noisy amd overpriced concrete jungle....

In regard to the comment of #8, Geylang is a safe area. I have stayed at a Hotel 81 with my young family with no worries at all.

If staying at Hotel 81 it's worth looking at www.asiatravel.com as they sometimes have better rates.
