About me
A native of northern Michigan, I received degrees in percussion performance and creative writing from Oberlin College and Conservatory, and spent several years putting them to no particular use as a touring pianist with several Detroit-based rock bands. Over the past five years I’ve authored Lonely Planet titles on Mexico, Puerto Rico, the United States and volunteer travel, worked as a freelance journalist and served as the music editor for several doomed internet ventures. Recent adventures include a long bike ride through southern Africa with Lonely Planet’s team in the – a cycling expedition which raises funds for sustainable transportation initiatives – and a year-long shoestring trip around the world with my partner of 10 years. I currently live in Brooklyn, New York and count among my personal interests bread baking, wilderness camping and tinkering with my bicycle.
