About me
Originally from Winnipeg, I have lived in Victoria, BC for over 20 years now, hence, Lotusland. Hitting 60 a few years ago, I realized that I had better get going on the extensive travel that I wished to do!
Starting in Asia, I spent a year in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China, teaching English at Zhejiang Shuren University. The next year, I visited Thailand, S. India, Sri Lanka and more of China, living out of my suitcase for almost 4 months!
The following year, an opportunity to join in a choral trip to Ho Chi Minh City came up, so that’s where I headed. Landing in Hanoi, I travelled independently for the first couple of weeks , then joined the group, finishing up in Ankor Wat! I had several off the beaten track trips to the National Parks to discover the local birds.
Afterthese two extensive touring trips, recognized that I would prefer to spend more time settled into a central place, and explore a region from there. Last winter, I spent 3 and a half months in Oaxaca, where much time and effort was spent in learning Spanish, and I was always grateful when understood by the local people. Travel out of the city has included several nearby villages, Puerta Escondido, a birding trip from Oaxaca to San Cristobal, San Cristobal itself, and Palenque. I even studied singing on this trip at the local Casa de la Cultura. I love this area, and hope to return to it again this coming winter.
Travel interests include exploring the local culture, food, and natural areas especially birds.
