The madrases round Registan sq in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. All blue tiles and ethereal domes. Want to snap my fingers and be there *now*!

Oh! My all-time fave! Except maybe a Barney Banana from the tuckshop at the local baths...

Thank god for obliging cabin staff!

We were stuck on the tarmac for two hours a few years ago and the staff decided to quell the growing revolt among the passengers by handing out free champagne. As they worked their way back down the economy cabin towards us I could see their stocks getting lower and lower. A row ahead of us, they ran out. Anguish and angst! One of them looked at the other, looked pityingly at us, and whispered "Let's crack the good stuff". She then proceeded to raid the 1st class galley and give we lucky-lasters a couple of glasses of Dom each for our patience...

    how the other half lives...

In contrast to the TV-dinner-and-plastic-fork of cattle class, I once flew Business across the pacific with LAN Chile. (Don't envy me - all I had to do was get double pneumonia and write off several months' salary on Visa).

Not only did I have several square meters of the cabin to myself (was it because I was a disease carrier, or just that I hadn't had a shower for some days?) , but the food!, I mean, the dining! Argentinean steak an inch think (sorry rose_m), a sumptuous Chilean merlot, crusty bread rolls I swear they baked in a little niche behind the pilot's cabin after takeoff, and a smear of lemon sorbet that had me smiling dreamily from Tahiti to Auckland.

All accompanied by the measure of a fine meal - cutlery with heft, and a linen napkin you could dress a bed with.
