posted a Message to Long-Term Family Travel and Sabbatical
I am an avid proponent of family travel and sabbaticals, having taken 14 during my 30 years of teaching--Australia to Zimbabwe, Mauritius to Mongolia, Turkey to Tibet. They really were a transformative cultural experience for myself as well as my wife and children. I started a blog, otherguysdime.wordpress.com describing these experiences as well as sharing helpful information about things like how to find the best opportunities, negotiate a contract, rent out your house, obtain overseas medical coverage, and travel safely and easily with young children. I also just finished a book on the same topic: On The Other Guy's Dime: A Professional's Guide to Traveling Without Paying. (The title refers to the fact that when you work overseas during a sabbatical you typically earn enough to pay most or all of your overseas expenses–sort of like a "grown-up Peace Corps" experience, just for a shorter time and at a higher level!) You might want to check it out on Amazon or Barnes & Noble.
