About me
I dabbled in careers as diverse as Christmas tree salesman, ski bum, PR flak and New York City bike messenger before moving to Ukraine and settling into a career as an editor and writer. I was editor-in-chief of the Kyiv Post, an English-language weekly, from 1999 to 2003 then moved briefly back to Washington, DC, before following my future wife to Manila for 4 years. In 2008 we moved to our current home, Phnom Penh.
I divide my work time between travel writing and editing technical reports for international organizations. Free time is spent playing tennis and hockey (where possible), traveling around Asia to play in Ultimate frisbee tournaments, and hanging out with my wife, friends and 4-year-old daughter Anna.
I return often to the former Soviet Union and have contributed to Lonely Planet guides to Ukraine, Russia, Uzbekistan and the Baltics. I’ve also updated two editions of LP’s Philippines and Southeast Asia on a Shoestring books and one edition of Cambodia. My travel articles have been appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald, the South China Morning Post, the Toronto Globe & Mail and Action Asia, among other publications.
You can read about my LP-related travels at www.mytripjournal.com/bloomblogs.
