I am presently and finally back on the road!! p.s. To save you wondering, I am one of those handful of backpackers who have spent time in Iraq since the present conflict started. In the summer of 2003, I spent 6 weeks backpacking around most parts of Iraq. All by myself. For more on that trip, please refer to some of the information at the bottom of this profile.

Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Mark Twain. STILL NOT ENOUGH RED ON THE ABOVE MAP FOR MY LIKING. This may come as a surprise, but I am not that stupid. Well, maybe a bit. I like the unconventional and reasonably unpredictable type of travel. To me, there is a definite link between travelling “off-the-cuff” and being a tourist (I don’t want to get into that exact debate!!). To me, the more organised something is, the less adventurous it can be. I think that there is more possibility of adventurous type things happening if no plans have been made. It’s not just about “adventurous” type events, it’s just having the spontaneity to change one’s mind at a whim when opportunities present themselves. That sort of freedom is highly unlikely in tours. I prefer to get well off the tourist track and get “down and dirty” as it were.
