But keep your special occasions straight! I recently brightly announced at checkin that it was my birthday, and the agent outsmarted me by reminding me that it was my anniversary too (recorded from a previous visit). Luckily got a laugh and an upgrade!

Emirates is a mixed bag. They partner with UA (*A) and JAL (OW), and also with CO, Jet, Kingfisher, SAA, Korean, and Virgin Blue.

This is usually true, but there are always exceptions to the rule. During shoulder seasons airlines often substantially drop rates when they need butts in seats. Also, some airlines open up award seats close to departure dates, giving you a better crack at burning your frequent flyer miles for the trip.
