As cliche as it can be i think that asia is definately the easiest place to meet individuals travellers. If this is your first travel alone experience you may want to skip the harsher travel climates of Cambodia and India and go for a road more travelled like Vietnam and Thailand. Just because lots of people go to these places does not mean that you will not enjoy it.

commented on I'm planning / hoping to go travelling in April/May next year, but can't decide where to go at the moment. Any suggestions? As this will be my first time alone, I want to go for a max of 3 weeks to see what it's like, as I'm a bit nervous. in Going Solo

commented on So I'm a bit nervous about traveling solo like most of you. Any good stories to put me at ease? in Going Solo
Hell ya dude. I I have had both good and bad experiences but the best piece of advice i could offer is to ALWAYS sleep in dorms. A single can get lonely and it can be hard to connect with others when the only place there is to sit down is a bed. Also dont be afraid to invite others along on a days itinerary... and dont be afraid to change your own if someone you meet is doing something interesting!

Nothing like a frozen Harbin to chill those hot nights on the South China Sea!

first off it should be noted that Bill Bryson is a king amongst travel writers... I would recommend "Undress me in the Temple of Heaven" and "Lost on Planet China" for anyone who is considering joining me here in the world's most populace country. The former is an account of when travel goes wrong for two young women (actually a good read no matter where you are going). The latter is the most humorous account of traveling I have found on travel in China. Be warned... do not read it on the overnight train, your laughter will keep your bunk mates up all night!
