Absolutely!......you almost felt like you were in first class when it came to food service. I was excited at real cutlery back then. I don't remember getting the Almdudler but it does sound familiar. My most vivid memory of the food was the chocolate mousse.....heavenly.

Quantity AND Quality.........the best MAY be gone......RIP
Quantity first - In the days when Ansett were still alive and doing their international flights, they had awesome food service. Sure their food may not rate as the best in the biz but they certainly made up for it in regularity and quantity. On long haul flights in between the normal meal services, if you had just one eye half open after rousing from a chin slobbering sleep/daze, they would bombard you with ice-creams and chocolate bars, beers and wines, fruit, nuts, chippies and more! It was relentless. In fact they seemed to have an endless supply of tempters on offer and were so regular that I suspect there was bets as to which staff could start a barf bag chain reaction first......the prize for the winner would be to watch their colleagues clean up the aftermath.
Quality next - Once there was a young Austrian fella called Niki who aside from having what seemed a girls name, proved he had big kahuna's by winning the F1 championship 3 times and then went into the airline business. Lauda Air was bought out by Austrian Airlines in 1999 but before then I had the pleasure of flying with them several times and every time their food was amazing and has not been surpassed (IMHO) on any other airline. The secret was that Lauda had setup a deal with one of the the most famous, leading restaurants in Vienna to cater for the food served on their flights, which meant it was restaurant quality.........hard to believe but I kid you not, it was that good.
Unfortunately both these airlines have now disappeared from our skies but even though it's been 10 years since I've flown either, they still rate highest in the food categories of any airline I've flown since (most of the major airlines)...may their memory live on strong and yummy in my tummy.

Also a fav of mine Vivek. There used to be a few places in Melbourne that had it but Kilkenny's seems to have taken it's place everywhere. You can buy it online from here;
