I was born, grew up & was educated in Portsmouth, Hampshire. On finishing my secondary education at a grammar school I decided to join the Royal Air Force as an aircraft apprentice as I had an interest in aeroplanes, engineering & I wanted opportunities to travel. I graduated from my apprenticeship as an aircraft fitter, airframes with the rank of Junior Technician.
From the technical training school I was posted to Germany to join the ’thin blue line keeping the Russian Red Hordes at bay, in betwwen drinking some excellent German & Dutch beer of course!
Returned to the UK for 4 years before being posted overseas again, this time to Singapore to take part in one of the UK’s ‘Forgotten Wars’, the’Confrontation’ with Indonesia over the formation of Malaysia. General(President)Soekarno of Indonesia was overthrown in a coup & the confrontation ended.(Note: It was never oficially called a war, similar to the earlier conflict with the Malayan Communist Party in Malaya some 15 years before which was called an ‘Emergency’. Without a scratch I was now able to spend more time enjoying my new found hobby Scuba Diving.
