I grew up in the States, and when I spent several months in France, I loved it but did miss home. I tried dealing with specific issues, specific things I missed, like food and then tackling them one at a time (going to an American restaurant, finding a store that sold U.S. food products).
What I would do now if I were in the same situation would be to host people from the U.S. I would find these guests by using Tripping.com.
