I suppose it depends what you're looking for. beaches, culture, cities, partying....

from what i recall, there are 2-3 per day that leave from the the talat sao bus station (a fare old distance from the centre)....

you can take an overnight, sleeper bus from vientiane - i believe they leave around 7pm ish, and you'll get dropped off on the islands by...

The Blue Gecko Bar just north of District 1 shows a lot of sports and is very popular with Aussies, so I'd imagine there is the best bet.

Not sure about LP, but in Vientiane you can drop your passport off at the embassy and pick it up the next day.

if you like football, i believe the english national football team are due to play a game in thailand as part of the celebrations.

In the evenings by the riverside there is a kind of festival - fireworks etc. in PP....
