About me
Who was the real Blandine Forberg? I chose this name to honour a young woman whose story is nothing special for her times, but it touched me deeply when I unearthed it in the church archive of Halle, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany. Blandine would be forgotten if her name wasn’t inscribed on a beautiful big and heavy silver bowl that a church in Halle used for baptism. She donated a sum of money in her will to have it made in 1682.
The background story is this: 1682 the plague killed half the population of Halle. Blandine, age 22 and daughter of a goldsmith, was the last living member of her family. I found the death entries in the church register. They all died within a couple of weeks, first the mother, then her little sister, then the 16 year old brother, finally her father and, a day after him, Blandine herself. She made her will, which is also preserved, on her deathbed – probably on behalf of her father who wasn’t able to do so any more.
A sad story behind a wonderful work of art.
