Lonely Planet review

Mauritius' oldest resort shares the same management as Sugar Beach next door, but there's a completely different feel here. Rather than a colonial-manse theme, La Pirogue opts for a charming fishing-village vibe, with semicircular clusters of adorable hut-villas arranged along the 500m of spectacular sandy beach.

The resort was built around the same time as the Sydney Opera House; if you look carefully you'll notice that the thatch roofing is arranged in a similar fashion to the trademark cavalier helmet–like roofing on the iconic opera house. To some, it may feel like the resort is starting to show its age, but to most visitors, La Pirogue represents a classic paradigm of Mauritius' beachside hospitality.

Our independent authors have visited La Pirogue and selected this as one of our recommended hotels in The West.
