Pointe d’Esny & Blue Bay

Restaurants in Pointe D’esny & Blue Bay

    Le Jardin de Beau Vallon

Emerging from an inland thicket of trees and sky-scraping cane leaves, Beau Vallon is an enchanting colonial estate that has been carefully and lovingly refurbished over the last few decades. Romantic dark-wood panelling, flavourful island spices, and the lazy spin of frond-shaped ceiling fans elicit fantasies found on the pages of a Ripling passage. Now if only the staff could be as charming and demure as the surrounds – our welcome wasn't as pleasant as it could have been.

    Le Bougainville

Worth a mention for its breezy terrace, friendly atmosphere and convenient location across from Blue Bay beach, Le Bougainville is a popular hang-out for locals and tourists alike. The menu is vast – salads, pizza, fish, curries etc – but it's best to stick to the drink list when there's a crowd (a plethora of orders never fails to confuse the kitchen staff).

  3. La Belle Kréole

Set on a mangrove and marked by a large pirogue, this popular option dishes out tasty Mauritian cuisine like venison curry and rougaille saucisses. The prices are very high, but the lagoon-side atmosphere is undeniably memorable.

    Chez Maryse

After winning a 'women's empowerment' grant from the Mauritian government, friendly Maryse and her two sisters opened a small restaurant in her backyard. Savoury Creole eats are stewed under her yellow tin roof and served to contented customers gathered around the haphazard collection of tables. Chez Maryse is across the street from L'Oiseau du Paradis.

    Charka Steakhouse

Set deep within the grounds of Le Preskîl resort but billed as its own separate restaurant, Charka is a must for meat lovers. Fresh South African steaks of the highest quality are grilled to perfection in modern surrounds sparsely accented by the odd African mask or hunting spear. Reservations are essential, especially if you aren't staying at the hotel.

    Blue Bamboo

Blue Bamboo has many charms: a cosy plant-filled cloister, delicious pan pizza, friendly owners and an inviting lounge on the 2nd floor. The upstairs bar is open every day, except Monday, from 6pm to midnight. It's best to call ahead if you're eyeing a table in the bamboo-lined courtyard.
