    Restaurant du Quai

This friendly place by the harbour is always full in the evenings with local families and visitors enjoying its fine seafood and lobster dishes. The charming staff are very keen to please and make a damn fine punch cocktail as an aperitif.

  2. B

    Mazavaroo

Hikers tackling a scenic east-coast jaunt can take a lunch break at this very casual affair. Hunker down on chopped palm trunks to savour home-cooked seafood (smoked marlin, grilled fish, prawns and lobster) served on painted pastel tables.

  3. La Marmite Des Îles

Waitresses donning flowery Creole dresses serve up delicious local specials like zesty ourite (octopus) salad and mouth-watering grilled fish. The restaurant is located along the sea, behind a rather derelict building near the bus station. There are no signs leading the way, so you'll have to snoop around until you hear the island tunes punctuating the humid tropical air.

  4. C

    Chez Ram

The fanned white napkins do little to give this place any sense of charm or character, and the four outdoor tables sit rather unceremoniously beside the parking and main road, but Chez Ram does offer up excellent local cuisine – it has the exact same menu as Restaurant du Quai (owned by the same family). The dining room closes at 9.30pm.

  5. D

    Bambou

The most sociable spot in Anse aux Anglais, this popular restaurant earns high points for its friendly, dread-headed staff who serve up the usual assortment of local seafood and chicken. Grab one of the tiny tables outside and watch island life roll by at the public beach across the street.

Perched above a plaza of tour operators, Port Mathurin's newest haunt serves local and international dishes in swish surrounds.
