I'm really wanting to visit Mali. I have an open itinerary but definitely want to go to Timbuktu and trek in Dogon Country. How safe is it to visit? My govt. says 'Do not travel' but of course this is just a serious precaution. Any advice from people on the ground?
Can anyone give any info on how to get a visa for Mali from Australia? Saw the Visasdirect site and their fee is three times the amount of the visa fee! if i've understood correctly. I'm flying directly from Australia to Mali. I understand you can't get a visa at the airport anymore. Thanks
This Mali board doesn't get updated that much, it seems. I am looking at going to Mali for a week or two in September/October with my girlfriend this year and I was wondering what the security situation is like, especially in the capital and Timbuktu. We live in Guinea-Bissau and would be travelling to Mali overland from Senegal.
I am travelling all thru West Africa - mid June for 3/4 weeks
Hoping that the tourist numbers will be down then - but rain & humidity not too high!
is there any logic in travelling from the North or South 1st etc - to avoid the on-coming (& worsening) rain & humidity?
ie which countries are likely to be getting worst 1st?
Any places to avoid?
Grey skies make for poor photos too!
I intend to drive from Nouakchott to Bamako next January. Previously the Mali visa could be obtained at the border, but that is no longer the case, so I am goint to have to get my visa in advance.
I believe that there is a Mali Embassy in Nouakchott. Has anybody got a visa from there? How long did it take and how much does it cost? (I have a UK passport)
I could get one in London before I leave, but at 195 pounds, I am sure it must be cheaper in Africa.
Another option would be to get one in…
I'm planning to spend a couple of days in Bamako as a short stopover heading back to Nigeria. My french is basic, so I wondered if anyone had any recommendations for a private driver to take me around? thanks
In March of this year, I spent 9 incredible days travelling overland from Ouagadougou to Bamako and through Dogon Country. I hope that my review (skewed towards Mali) provides a recent update on some of the challenges and opportunities in travelling through Mali. I aim to provide more detailed comments on discrete topics (e.g. Dogon Country) in coming weeks.
I applied for the Burkina visa in advance directly through the UK consulate (1 week turnaround). The situation regarding the…
