In Which Our Hero Wets Himself, Repeatedly.
Blog: ally - 19 November 2009
The theme of day one in KL was damp – from the slightly sticky sweet smell of the tropics as I entered the terminal, to the perspiration as I dragged my luggage to the hotel, to the down pour in the afternoon in which I managed to get drenched, to the enourmous shower-head in the [...]

The Ferry Ride from Hell
Blog: The Fashionate Traveller - 17 November 2009
Oh my. I've regretted a few decisions on my holiday so far, but getting the ferry to Penang from Langkawi instead of flying was a DOOZIE! I'd gone on a snorkelling tour the day before at Pulau Payar, an hour away, and since this formed the first part of the ferry ride...well, I'd already done it. Had a lovely boatride the day before. Calm blue ocean and all that.

Melaka, Malaysia
Blog: Patrick and Katrina do the Globe - 17 November 2009
In Melaka we finally found the quaint, charming southeast Asian town we'd been looking for. The streets were full of colonial character, with narrow alleys and colorful shutters on the aging mansions and clan houses.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Blog: Patrick and Katrina do the Globe - 15 November 2009
It was a stomach-turning, Malaysian pop music-filled, four-hour van ride down from the Cameron Highlands and we were greeted by a steamy day in Kuala Lumpur. First we settled in to our delightfully airconditioned room at the Mayview Glory.

It’s a long, long way to Kuala Lumpur…
Blog: ally - 15 November 2009
AKA: AirAsia Ouch! Flight from Melbourne to KL on AirAsia X was not nearly as horrible as I feared but no better than I expected. Check-in was again a breeze. Flight left twenty minutes late, but landed twenty minutes early. Seats cramped, but a bigger issue I found was the lack of legroom meant I couldn’t [...]

Penang - The Big Three
Blog: Street Foodie - 14 November 2009
On my third day in Penang, I decided to make an all out assault on the Big 3 - the three dishes identified by Penang expert Rasa Malaysia as the essential tastes of Penang. Along with Robyn Eckhardt at EatingAsia, her writing was one of the main reasons I came to Penang in the first place. So, rather than pitch up to any old stall and try my luck, I decided to follow Rasa's specific recommendations and get my map out for a bit of a treasure hunt.

Adventures in Shopping; Malls in KL; Gothic lolita shop "i-socks"
Blog: The Fashionate Traveller - 13 November 2009
It was a very hot sunny day (hooray!) when I set off up Jalan Pudu and Jalan Imbi to go visit the Berjaya Times Square. On the way there was a group of Malay women in exotic colours that I quickly snapped (but not without one's husband spotting me - SNAP!)

Cameron Highlands, Malaysia
Blog: Patrick and Katrina do the Globe - 12 November 2009
Imagine a Boston summer day. Then imagine donning a winter coat and jeans and going for a one mile jog along the Esplanade. Follow that up with pouring a bucket of warm maple syrup over your head and then hopping on a jam packed green line train only to get stuck between Arlington and Copley. That would be about half as hot, sticky, and uncomfortable as walking outside for five minutes in Malaysia. Ok, maybe that is a little bit of an exaggeration, but there is a reason that cool mountain retreats are much appreciated in this country a few degrees north of the equator.

Penang, Malaysia
Blog: Patrick and Katrina do the Globe - 10 November 2009
After a week and a half of rest and relaxation on Thailand's beaches, we were ready to pack away our swim trunks for a bit and put our sightseeing pants back on. Our first attempt was to visit a "typical" Thai town on our way south.

Tune Hotels Review – Accommodation Like A Low Cost Airline
Blog: The Travel Tart - Offbeat Tales From A Travel Addict - 4 November 2009
Have you ever turned up to an airport at midnight, dreading the prospect of haggling with a taxi driver that may take you on a special 100 buck early morning scenic tour? Or, if you want to avoid that, mortgaging your house to pay for the convenience of an overpriced room at an expensive hotel chain [...]Tune Hotels Review – Accommodation Like A Low Cost Airline is a post from: Funny Travel, Offbeat Travel, Weird Travel - The Travel Tart

In the late 1860s, a poor teenager from Guangdong Province named Cheong Fatt Tze fled the Opium Wars and escaped to Dutch-controlled Jakarta, then called Batavia. Shop till you drop in Kuala Lumpur
Blog: velvet escape's blog - 12 October 2009
Malaysians love to shop. I believe the favourite national pastime in the weekends is strolling through one of the many shopping malls. For the locals, it’s a family-outing or a way of spending time with friends. It’s also a great opportunity to people-watch or escape the scorching tropical heat outside! For tourists, Kuala Lumpur is [...]
