The modern Bintang Plaza has a few internet cafes, a decent bookshop, and several restaurants. It's one of the two main shopping malls in Miri. Wisma Pelita is the other.

    Bee Chin Heong

This interesting outlet sells a colourful, bewildering assortment of religious statues, furniture and temple supplies; if you’re after a huge Chinese couch, a household shrine or have RM55,000 to spend on a 2m-tall carved wood Buddha, this is the place to come. Even if you’re not buying, it’s still worth a look round.

    Peter Hoe Evolution

Peter Hoe’s original batik designs on sarongs, shirts and dresses are the main drawcard here, but you’ll find many tastefully arranged Malaysian and imported Asian home goods, too. There’s also a much bigger store (Peter Hoe Beyond; [tel] 2026 9788; 2nd floor Lee Rubber Building, 145 Jln Tun HS Lee; open 10am to 7pm) with a pleasant cafe around the corner on the 2nd floor of the old Lee Rubber Building.

    Japanese Shiatsu & Reflexology

Nothing feels better than a massage after a climb up Kinabalu or a trek through Maliau Basin. This cramped massage parlour in the Wisma Merdeka shopping mall doesn't look very encouraging at first glance, but the masseuses here are very good indeed.
