Japanese restaurants in Malaysia

  1. A

    Nishiki

Operated by a Japanese expat, this authentic Japanese restaurant takes full advantage of the city's excellent fish markets. When we were there, the master served up some thick slices of tender yellowjack tuna that were as good as any we've had in Japan. The atmosphere is pleasantly traditional, right down to the sushi counter. There are good-value set meals, sushi sets, and plenty of à la carte choices. You won't find authentic Japanese food for this price anywhere else outside of Japan.

  2. B

    Kirishima

Japanese living in or visiting Penang head straight here, and many foreigners cite it the best sushi they've ever had. The setting is dark Japanese chic, with saki bottles lining the walls. As well as sushi there is also excellent seafood. Reserve in advance for peak hours.

    Gonbei

This brilliantly conceived Japanese restaurant is entered through a Zen walkway of leaning beams. There's a broad sushi and sashimi menu, including seasonal fugu (blowfish) for the brave. Diners sit around a series of open kitchens.

    Hana Shima

Good-quality Japanese restaurant offering sushi and sashimi set menus. Right next door is the associated Hana K Bar, which is a popular after-work hang-out for locals, and not a bad choice for a drink.
