Lonely Planet review

Rising high above Georgetown, Penang Hill provides a cool retreat from the sticky heat below. There are spectacular views over the island and mainland, gardens, an old-fashioned kiosk and a restaurant, as well as a lavishly decorated Hindu temple and a mosque at the top. The Swiss-built funicular was completed in 1923 and has trundled up and down ever since.

Penang Hill is particularly wonderful at dusk as Georgetown, far below, starts to light up.

A number of roads and walking trails traverse the hill. You can walk the 5.5km (3.5mi) to the Botanical Gardens (Moon Gate) in about three hours from the trail near the upper funicular station. The easier jeep track from the top also leads to the gardens, just beyond the Moon Gate. Take water and food on longer walks.
