    Nonya (or Nyonya) cuisine combines Chinese and Malay culinary traditions. These days, Nonya restaurants are harder to find: indeed, this tiny place is hidden down a nondescript side street. It offers a menu of spicy favourites such as otak-otak (fish wrapped in banana leaves) and sweet and spicy kerabu prawns. It also does excellent-value set lunches.

    Basic Indian eatery, seemingly forever full of chatting locals, serving up tandoori chicken, roti canai (unleavened flaky flat bread) and murtabak (roti canai filled with meat or vegetables). There's an air-conditioned dining hall if you prefer more comfort with your curry.
