  1. Bijan

    While KL has plenty of places to enjoy good Malay food, there are very few where you can sample skilfully cooked traditional dishes in a sophisticated environment. This is the rare exception. Try the tempeh (fermented soybean cake) with anchovies, tomato rice, fried eggplant in spicy chilli sauce and a surprisingly pleasant durian cheesecake.

    Silk cushions and drapes abound at this posh Thai place that aims to create the colonial mood of Jim Thompson's villa in Bangkok. Refreshingly, style does not triumph over substance - the Thai food is excellent, with numerous regional dishes from around Thailand.

    Part of a large Thai restaurant group, Old Siam still manages to feel cosy and inviting, partly because of the old-fashioned shophouse setting. The Thai food is competently prepared and there are happy-hour specials on drinks before .

    This excellent Vietnamese restaurant is decorated with colourful propaganda posters. The kitchen turns out huge plates of delicious Vietnamese food, garnished with basil, mint, lettuce and sweet dips. Despite being listed as a starter, the banh xeo (a huge Vietnamese pancake with meat, seafood or vegetables) is a meal all by itself.
