Lonely Planet review for Nasi Kandar Pelita in KLCC
This swish, fan-cooled pavilion near the KLCC is probably the flashiest of all the mamak canteens in KL.

Heavy on Taste, Cheap on the Pocket

When you are done shopping till your toes hurt at the Surya KLCC, or if you are feeling peckish after enjoying a concert at the Kuala Lumpur Philharmonic Hall, take a short stroll to Nasi Kandar Pelita pavillion to savour some Malaysian favorites. It is open 24/7 and is usually packed with office workers and tourists alike so it doesn’t matter if you’re in your Bermudas or dressed to the nines. It is amazing how the busboys spot newcomers in the crowd, so the minute you’re seated, they’ll approach for the order. Most regulars have memorized the fare, but for the uninitiated, the menu will be helpful. It serves mainly Indian-Muslim-Malaysian-style food. You can opt to choose vegetables, fish and meat dishes at the nasi kandar counter to go with your rice.
There is a variety of fried rice and noodles. Tandoori bread with tender , well-marinated pieces of chicken tikka is a crowd-pleaser . Murtabak is a popular dish, made of dough stuffed with chicken or beef or mutton and fried in egg. My favorite is the rich and spicy mutton soup, eaten by dunking toasted bread into it.
To wash it all down, order the sweet frothy the “teh tarik”, a quintessential favorite, or pick from a variety of fresh tropical fruit juices such as watermelon, pineapple, mango or starfruit. Fresh coconut water is an instant cooler.
For dessert, try the “ice kacang” – a delicious concoction of shaven ice layered with evaporated milk and syrup, topped with a sprinkling of jelly, nuts and dried fruits.
The ambience here is boisterous; during peak hours, you’ll need to raise your voice to be heard over the din or share the table with strangers.
But it is this very vibrancy of this establishment plus its no-frills atmosphere that makes its customers return for more.
