Lonely Planet review for Tai Thong Grand Restaurant

A popular lunchtime stop for dim sum, this upmarket Chinese banquet house switches to a Cantonese à la carte menu in the evening. Locals come here for the filling set meals.

Of growling tummies and cups of tea!

Do you love food? Hands up, please! Yes, we LOVE food, in fact, we Live for it. Some people eat to live, but the real fun is in enjoying every morsel of our food. Savour the mouth-watering dishes. And the not-so-fantastic fare? Remember to never re-order that meal! We’re no connoisseurs of food but we do enjoy a good meal.

KL is an interesting city. From bustling cheap roadside hawker stalls to upscale yuppie-type cafes and busy, luxurious restaurants, one is spoilt for choices. So, how does one pick? Do a Eeeny meeny miney mo? Here’s a secret..we try everything! Maybe less of the restaurants unless we have that bit extra.

From busy KLCC, and through the heat, we made our way to Tai Thong, refined Chinese culinary. Not easy with children in tow, but we managed it! It looks grand! We did a quick math outside. Decision? Look, a crowd of hungry looking people were headed this way. Yes, lunch time in vibrant KL - when everyone heads out for a much needed one-hour break!

Hurriedly, we went in. A petite Chinese lady ushered us to a table said,“Ni yao..?” What was that again? Should’ve paid more attention to my Mandarin classes! Resorting to hand gestures, we heard a male voice booming above us,“Yes, may I help you?”.A smartly-dressed captain had appeared. Relief! “Why not try our Dim Sum?”, he suggested, smilingly.

Plates of steam pork ribs, ha gau and mini egg tarts arrived. My children enjoy eating yummy lo mai kai, soft and gooey glutinous rice, saturated with chicken juices. All was quiet at our table as we tucked into the fare laid out before us. Best dim sum? It depends on your personal taste but it’s worth a try.

With our growling tummies placated, we looked around. Everyone was busy eating dim sum, chatting lightheartedly with their friends. Some had ordered elaborate dishes served with rice. The Restaurant was full. Relaxing with our “Kok Fah” (refreshing Chrysanthenum tea) we soaked in the ambience of elegance around us.
