    Lonely Planet review

This stately monolith is the oldest established hotel in Malawi; opened in 1922 it was a legendary stop for travellers on the Cape-to-Cairo route. With its wood-panelled lobby, elegant restaurant, pool and gym and bar, it remains the premier choice of business people.

Rooms deserve the four-star rating with stylish fittings, huge beds and sumptuous decor. Ryalls also runs the superb 21 Grill on Hanover next door. There's also a Wilderness Safaris office here to help you arrange trips to nearby Liwonde National Park.

Our independent authors have visited Protea Hotel Ryalls and selected this as one of our recommended hotels in Blantyre.
