cycling in Malawi

Hey All
Any suggestions for cycling in malawi? I won't be bringing a bike so will need to rent one. I'm experienced at cross country long haul , paved road cycling with moderate to steep climbs . Preferring a natural landscape area with budget accomodations where I can take long day trips. Also open to a 3 to 5 day circuit... Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

en route to Ethiopia

any one know what the best way is for me to get to Ethiopia from Malawi? I would prefer to go through Tanzania and Kenya via land but based on what I've read doesn't seem that feasible? Is a direct flight the cheapest/most comfortable option or are there decent train/bus options through neighboring countries? And is it a TON cheaper to book a flight in advance or can it be cheap enough to just move where the breeze takes me and just book when I'm ready to move on from wherever I end up?

Lake Malawi - ferry query

A couple of us are wanting to cycle in Malawi. Part of the trip will be to cycle up to Nkata Bay and then we were planning to catch ferry back down. I've read so many things about the ferry not working any longer, but I've also heard about MV Chambo and MV Chilembwe. I would really appreciate if anyone can give me advice.

Warning: big chance of getting schistosomiasis (bilharzia)in Lake Malawi!?

My sister and I went to Cape Maclear for a few days last September and unfortunately/stupidly we took a swim in Lake Malawi. About 4 weeks later we both got really sick (high fever, night sweating, terrible headaches, very short of breath). Last week we heard, what we already expected, we both have bilharzia.

People on this forum mostly say chances are slim you will get it, and if you get it, it is not a big thing. However, we do think chances are quite big, and it is a big thing!!
We only…

Nairobi to Malawi, by bus, fast

I will arrive in Nairobi, Kenya, this Friday and need to travel from Nairobi to Malawi, by bus, fast (as in a few days at most). Since a direct bus is presumably not available (correct me if I’m wrong) one or two stops would be acceptable. What would be the best, fastest and safest way to do that? The more details (companies, where to get the ticket, travel time, hotels on the way), the better, since I won’t have a lot of time to figure things out myself once I’m there. As a Dutch passport…

Weather in Malawi in January

Hey!

Does anyone know what how wet Malawi is in January. We are already going there for work, and want to spend the last couple of weeks of Janaury traveling around. I known its the rainy season, but if someone could tell me if this means afternoon showers or "constant rain" with closed roads, flooding ect. it would be great!
We would love to go hiking, and possibly spend some time at lake malawi too! Ive understood that January is not the best time to go, but id like to know what its like:)

Monkey Bay to Lilongwe to South Luangwa

Hello,

I'll be in Monkey Bay later this month arriving from Mozambique and am trying to figure out my best bet for transport to Lilongwe.

I've found various references to buses via Salima on the M5 or via Dedza on the M1, but all have been a bit vague as to the logitics. I've also read about AXA coach service from Lilongwe. Is there a corresponding return route?

From Lilongwe I'll be moving on to Chipata/South Luangwa in Zambia, so if you have any advice on that leg it would also be…

Transport Mbeya-Malawi

Hi guys,

Just a quick question for those who have overlanded from Mbeya to Malawi.

Should I be counting on 1 full day of travel from, for example, Nkhata Bay to Mbeya, or do I need to consider an overnight stop?

Thanks!

Coast to Coast Trip Report September 2014 - Malawi

Some things I wish I had known before I went on a recent (September – October) trip from Ilha Mozambique across to Swakopmund by public transport and hitching through Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia on my alternative Cape to Cairo (Coast to Coast – I don’t get that much holiday!) visiting castles and sites of colonial importance (I am a geek).

From Mulange (border) to Limbe cost 1650kw and somehow managed to take 2 hours 30 minutes. From there there are plenty of minibuses to…

Transfer Monkey Bay Airport

Hi All

My girlfriend and I are flying into Monkey Bay from Zambia in a few weeks time. Are there matolas at the airport that can give us a ride onto our lodgings in Cape Maclear? The hotel has quoted us for a transfer but it's pretty steep so would prefer to use local transport if possible.

Thanks in advance!
