Given that Iceland hasn’t exactly been short of volcanic eruptions recently, the decision to start up the world’s first guided tour of a volcano, 120 metres deep in a magna chamber, is either genius or borderline certifiable. Yet that’s exactly what adventure company 3H Travel has done, launching mountaineer-led excursions into Thrihnukagigur Volcano, in Bláfjöll Country Park, this summer. A 40-minute hike and cable-car ride take you into the heart of the volcano, which has lain dormant for 4,000 years. Unusually, the magma has drained away, leaving a vast chamber of incredible colours and rock formations.
