New York,
Crowning glory in New York

It was our last full day in New York. The sky was a bleak grey as we climbed the stairs of the pedestal on which The Statue of Liberty stands. Since the sight of Lady Liberty historically signalled the start of a new life for many people, I had decided that this spot, overlooking the water towards Manhattan, would be the perfect place to propose to my girlfriend. As soon as she said yes to the popped question, the clouds broke above us and the grey vanished. The observation deck offered an unusual perspective of the familiar landmark and, as we looked up, the 125-year-old lady shone green against the blue, as if she was joining in our celebration.

Peter Leslie lives in Edinburgh and spent two weeks on the northeast coast of the USA.
