To the north of Toliara you'll find the dusty little beach shack town of Ifaty, a good place to snorkel and dive. You can swim with the sharks on the small reef offshore, and in July and August watch the migrating humpbacks cruise past. Birdlovers won't want to miss the nearby Reniala Nature reserve, where birdlife abounds among the spiny forest and baobab trees of this beachside desert region.
