Introducing South of Toamasina

Stretching south of Toamasina is the network of man made and natural coastal lakes and rivers known as the Canal des Pangalanes. It isn't the most visually stunning coastal area on earth, but there are some great beaches and plenty of places to meet the locals, who will most likely be tending their nets or coffee trees. Drop into Manakara or Mananjary to discover just how sleepy a Madagascan backwater can be, but avoid the pousse-pousse (rickshaw) drivers of Manakara: they will fleece you every time.
