Usually a sleepy kind of town, Ohrid comes alive with visitors in the summer. It also has a long running history of cultural and religious significance, being the heartland of Macedonian Orthodoxy, and in the 10th century, the capital of the kingdom of Tsar Samoil.
Just north of the Greek border, is the town of Bitola, sitting atop a plateau at the foot of Mt Pelister, where the locals are warm, but the air is chilly. Just 10km away is 12,500 hectares of national park where there's a spot of skiing to be had between December and March, and beautiful hiking over the summer.
