For a great view of the city, take the 20-minute taxi ride up Mount Vodno to the Sveti Pantelejmon monastery with its sweet little 12th-century church and excellent traditional restaurant.

Even if not so keen on exploring monasteries the visit is worth it for the restaurant. Marvelleus food and the wine (poured from the barrels to plastic water bottles to a more than handsome glassful) tastes perfect. Decor is charmingly idyllic and has all the makings of a romantic hideout. If possible take the table in front of the fireplace, besides the warmth from the huge burning logs you'll get to witness your steak getting grilled. Mains go from 60-1600 MKD, drink selection is vast, but the menu pleases mostly carnivores.
If you didn't get up there by your own car, there is a good chance of hitching a lift from one of the locals heading down the hill.
