Visas, Embassies & Border Crossings

There is now an Australian Honorary Consulate in Macedonia. It is located at 11b Londonska, Skopje. there is also a Macedonian Embassy located in Canberra now. Australians are advised to get visas from there or from their port of departure before travelling to Macedonia.Iit can be quite difficult to obtain visas on the borders now. Australians have to pay 900 MKD, or €15, for a single entry visa. We are only given a 30 day visa now also. There is also a British Consulate as well as the British Embassy located in Skopje. the British Consulate is located in the library, across the street from the Macedonian national theatre, Stiv Naumon.

Australians do need a visa to be paid at the border. You must pay €12 or they will not let you through and there is no credit card or cash machine facility available. US dollars are accepted or the local currency.

I tried to enter the country but was denied as they do not issue visas at the border anymore for Canadians, and have not for 2 years.

To get a multi pass visa for Macedonia, I advise people to obtain this from the country they are leaving from, other wise you must travel to Bulgaria, Bosnia or Serbia as no multipass visa is given anywhere in Macedonia for Australians. these cost €34 for 3 months unlimited travel.

Travel Tips

If visiting the Treskavec Monastery for a night, you have to get a taxi to the foot of the mountain where the path starts its seven kilometer trek up to the monastery. Many visitors mistake the big Church of St Michael with its massive illuminated cross that sits on the hill above Prilep and make the highly tiring climb to that instead. Also, the Naumovski's left the monastery in 2004. It is now looked after a monk called Cristo who will still cook you some dinner, give you a tour and a place to sleep. He speaks perfect English and some other languages too!

Ohrid: Students everywhere get 50% discount on museum's entrance fees (50 instead of 100 Dinar), no ISIC is required. ATMs are situated in the pedestrian precinct. Sveti Naum, the church at the Albanian border, is located close to a military zone. The bus back to Ohrid starts from the border Tushemishte about 1 hour after it left Ohrid. That's important for calculating the return from Albania.

Moving About

For people moving around in the Balkan, here's a golden tip. For only €48 (for people 25+ it is just a little more expensive) one can buy a Balkan Flexipass which allows you to travel for 5 days within 1 month through the following countries: Serbia and Montenegro, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria Macedonia and Turkey. If your tired of thumbing your way around then this the second best option..
