An amazing cultural and natural odyssey through Lebanon taking in Baalbek, Byblos, Beiteddine, Aanjar and the spectacular Qadisha Valley

Lebanon should be considered as the jewel of the Middle East. There are few countries that offer such an array of ancient cities, medieval souqs and churches, with the buzzing modern metropolis of Beirut, fabulous cuisine and the dramatic mountains and valleys that criss cross the region. Our journey starts in the chic city of Beirut, which has once again returned to its former glory as a sophisticated city. Heading north we explore the ancient Roman ruins at Byblos and enjoy a coffee overlooking the picturesque harbour. Climbing from the coast we enter the beautiful World Heritage listed Qadisha Valley (Holy Valley) combining visits to Bcharre, Ehden, the rock hewn monastery of St Elisha and the Cedars. Weather permitting (in summer) we continue over the backbone of the Mt Lebanon Mountain Range to the Bekaa Valley and marvel at one of Lebanon's hidden secrets, the impressive ruins and colonnades at Baalbek, arguably the Middle East's most important Roman site. We stay in Baalbek at the famous Palmyra Hotel before we continue our journey via the ruins at Aanjar and the fascinating Beiteddine Palace, concluding in Beirut. Our short journey in this wonderfully compact country can be enjoyed as part of a longer trip to Jordan and Syria or taken on its own.
