Gauja NP is only 1.25 hours on a train from Riga. It's covered with thick forest and dotted with ponds and marshes with the river Gauja running through it.
I went on a train from Riga to Sigulda, then by bus from Sigulda's bus stand to Turaida; I visited the Turaida Castle then back to Sigulda on foot (5km). My guide book said that Sigulda's bus station is 10mins walk SW from the train station, but I don't think this is the case any longer. The bus stand/station appears to be right next door to…
We are traveling from Riga to Talinn in early July by bus or train. we have two questions:
(a) do we need to buy tickets in advance or can we just go to the train or bus station that day?
(b) we were hoping to stop somewhere along the way to just get out and see one more town, maybe Parnu? does anyone know if we can do that, and if so, what is better, train or bus to do so? Or is there another stop that anyone would recommend?
thanks very much for any advice!
Can anybody tell me if it's possible to swim in the baltic sea in summer? I plan a trip through all 3 countries but I'd like to have a few beach days. Or is the water too cold?
Any "must do's?" Thanks!
Just wanted to share a bit our experience with latviatravelandtours.com. My husband and I went to Riga for the weekend and were looking online for something special to do in Riga when we stumbled up this website. After a few back and forward e-mails with them, we decided to take the soviet and KGB tour. We met our guide Andrejs at the Central Market where we had a very interesting tour. Andrejs was very knowledgeable about the history of the buildings and also made us taste some…
This summer my husband and I have got three weeks to get from Vilnius to Tallinn. I'm thinking about staying in Riga for a week in the middle, and doing day trips out of there to visit the country. Good idea or not? For what it's worth, we're not huge art museum people, but we like markets, history museums, architecture, hiking, outdoors activities. We just thought that way we could easily self-cater for a few nights, but I'm wondering if it makes more sense to just keep travelling to really do…
I'm currently planning my vocation am I am planning to stop by in Latvia.
I was wondering, if I visit Latvia for 3 days, is that enough to enjoy my stay in Riga or should I stay longer or shorter? Can I get around and enjoy everything Riga has to offer in 2-3 days?
Is it possible for me to meet someone, a local, and tour me around during my short stay? I'm willing to pay food while we tour around with him/her. Are the locals friendly to tourists?
