  1. The Thakhek Loop, Unlooped

Blog: Many Moon Honeymoon - 26 March 2010

Our ride: A Honda XR250 Baja From Vientiane, our next destination was Thakhek, a town in central Laos. Thakhek is fairly well known for "The Loop". This is a motorcycle trip which takes people anywhere from two days to a week, exploring some of the wonderful back roads of central Laos and usually starting and [...]

  2. The Best-Laid Plans…

Blog: Travels with a Nine Year Old - 26 March 2010

We have hot-footed it — well, night-bused it — back from Luang Prabang to Vientiane, with a sleeper train to Bangkok ahead of us tonight, in quest of the elusive Myanmar visa. Whether because of Z’s performance in the embassy last time around (unlikely) or a verifiable and undeclared, though undistinguished and utterly apolitical, track record [...]

Blog: Travels with a Nine Year Old - 23 March 2010

Whatever our struggles with formal schooling, Z’s certainly learning a lot as we travel. And he sure does choose his moments to show it. We are literally halfway between Vietnam and Laos, him ceremonially straddling the red line dividing the Laotian end of the (small) bridge from the Vietnamese end, about three stamps and five sets [...]

  6. Buddha Park: It’s concrete and it’s wierd.

Blog: Many Moon Honeymoon - 19 March 2010

Buddha Park, or Xieng Khuan, is located about 25km outside of Vientiane, the capital city (or town, really) of Laos. To get there, we hired a tuk-tuk from the centre of town. The journey took about 45 minutes or so.

  7. All the way from Vientiane to Chang Mai in Thailand

    Blog: Orn's travel blog - South-East Asia and China - 18 March 2010

After the fun in Vang Vieng we took the bus down to Vientiane, the Laos’ capital.  Vientiane is a nice and cozy city but we had heard that there are not that many things to do and see there.  We therefore decided to get a room for the night and head for Thailand in the [...]

  8. Vientiane, capital of Laos

Blog: Many Moon Honeymoon - 18 March 2010

Vientiane must be one of the most laid back capital cities in the world — like the rest of Laos everything seems to happen slowly there. We spent four nights in Vientiane where we treated ourselves to a fabulous guesthouse called Hotel Khamvongsa. The fast internet connection allowed us to spend some time catching up with the rest of the world and planning the next steps of our trip.

  9. Friendly Vientiane

Blog: Matthew's Travel Blog - My thoughts on everything - 12 March 2010

As capital cities go, Vientiane has to be about the most friendly, relaxed and slow paced one that I’ve ever visited. It is small in city terms and I loved it. I only visited for a few days on my way elsewhere, and to be honest three days is probably more than enough to visit the city’s few sights and to soak up the atmosphere and sample the fine food.

  10. Slowing to the Lao pace. Vientiane, Laos

    Blog: Chronicles of a year-long break-up - 13 February 2010

When the french ran Indochine they had a saying that went; “The Vietnamese plant the rice, the Cambodians watch it grow and the Lao listen to it grow” so when we landed in Vientiane we readjusted our pace to ‘barely moving’. This allowed us to remain nonplussed when the queue for visa stamps was an [...]

  11. "That hurts, doesn't it?"

Blog: The Saturation Point of Bells - 2 February 2010

In Vientiane, you can't go far without bumbing into an establishment offering massage.  Of the wholesome, theraputic variety, I hasten to add. The most rudimentary menu will offer you a choice of 'soothing', 'Lao1 (meaning a little more vigourous), facial and foot.  Depending on the size and ambition of the establishment, any number of variations may soon follow.

Blog: The Saturation Point of Bells - 31 January 2010

Locals here in Lao PDR  will tell you that the PDR may officially be People's Democratic Republic, but in reality means 'Please Don't Rush'. And after ten minutes wandering around the capital, I was totally on board.

  13. Destination, Vientiane Laos

    Blog: Canada's Adventure Couple - 27 October 2009

It was a long bus ride from Hanoi, Vietnam to Vientiane, Laos. We shared it with packaged lobsters, 8 other travelers, some rice and other produce. What do you expect for peanuts? I don't know if I could handle the ride today, but a few years ago, armed with leftover sleeping pills prescribed from my doctor for an overactive thyroid, we managed to make it through many epic bus journeys.

  14. Vientiane

Blog: Where is Rob? - 29 May 2009

Vientiane was possibly the shortest stay in a place I will have on my trip. My time in Vientiane was a total of around and hour and a half. Just enough time to eat a burger, find the bus station and then make my way to Vang Vein. Upon arrival and from the short conversations we had with people here there really did not seem to be much to do. So instead of stay here a few nights and then head up
