  2. 20 hours in Vientiane, Laos

Blog: Roasted Bugs and Sticky Rice - 5 August 2011

Sunday, January 11, 2009 In the morning my friend and I flew from Phnom Penh into Vientiane, the capital of Laos. We stayed there just one night in a place on the Mekong- Thailand was on the other side. The price for the charming room, complete with AC and fan, TV, running hot water, phone, and [...]

  3. The Craziest Bus In the World

Blog: Hole In The Donut - 29 June 2011

I arrived at the bus station in Vientiane, Laos, bound for Pakse in the southern part of the country via an overnight bus. In the dark parking lot the sign on the double-decker bus brilliantly declared: “Sleeping Bus.” I expected seats that reclined but was surprised by a triple tier of double beds stretching down [...]

  4. Glutton for a Day in Vientiane, Laos

Blog: Hole In The Donut - 28 June 2011

As a single woman who spends most of her time on the road, it’s no surprise that I don’t cook. I rarely stay in accommodations with kitchen facilities and even if I did, it would be too expensive to buy all the spices and staples needed to prepare a decent meal. But though I rarely [...]

  5. The Sleepy Capital City of Vientiane, Laos

Blog: Hole In The Donut - 23 June 2011

Unlike the ancient capital city of Luang Prabang, whose 32 temples coerce visitors into hurry-up mode, the current capital of Vientiane encourages a leisurely pace. Here the brown Mekong River, virtually hidden behind a high earthen berm that protects the town during annual monsoon flooding, flows sluggishly past parks and small, exquisite temples that dot [...]

  6. April 25: Sobreity and Getting Stolen From

Blog: Lonely Girl Travels - 29 April 2011

Vientiane, April 25th: it was one of those perfect days. Until I found the money missing. April 25th is my sobriety birthday, the day I get to think to myself—”This is the number of years my life has been getting better.” This year was eleven. Eleven years of slowly, sometimes painfully, learning to live in [...]

  7. That Dam Black Stupa in Vientiane - Picture of the Week

    Blog: Malaysia Asia - 25 February 2011

That Dam Black Stupa in Vientiane is my Picture of the Week. This unique statue is said to be built on the cave of a dormant 7-headed dragon which rose to the rescue of the Vientiane population in the 1828 war with Thailand. If you are visiting Vientiane, make sure you visit the stupa  which was originally covered with gold and it is one of the most popular ones in town. There is no ticket

  12. The journey was more adventurous than the destination

Blog: nateniale { reflections on my travels and everything else I love } - 22 August 2010

When I was planning our trip to Vientiane, Laos, I thought that the little known country (at least to me!) would be an interesting trip compared to the other usual weekend trips from Singapore. Little did I know that the journey to get there (and back) would be more adventurous than the destination! And the drama unfolded even before our actual journey... Buying the air tickets

The British Open in St.Andrews is on. I knew very little about the game of golf myself, but since I'm staying at a friends place, I have been learning more about it. He has been building golf courses in Asia for over ten years and knows a great deal about them. Surprisingly, there is a great demand on this and Chinese, Vietnamese and American investors are building golf courses like crazy.

  15. 2010-07-06 | All good things come in threes | Day 675

    Blog: 2 Wheels - 1 World - 0 Money - 6 July 2010

The rear tire blew today. I found a nail in it. This was the third flat tire in three days. The second one was caused by a manufacturing-flaw of the inner tube. The valve ripped right out of the front wheel while driving. Damn. But these two incidents were only the universe's exclamation marks to remind me – change your bloody tires already! The first incident happened three days ago – the front tire blew suddenly, when I was going 100km/h on a country road. Only because of a bunch of  guardian angels I didn't crash.

    Blog: 2 Wheels - 1 World - 0 Money - 13 April 2010

Last day in Vientiane, last day in Laos. Over the past three months, it has become one of the most special places to me. I know it won't be the last time that I have visited. So I packed up and spend my last day visiting friends and took them out for drinks and dinner. They helped me out so much when I was on job-hunt. This is the least I can do. Until some time my beloved Laos and people.

  20. 2010-04-11 | Wet and wild | Day 589

    Blog: 2 Wheels - 1 World - 0 Money - 11 April 2010

Songkran I think they call it. More widely known as the water-festival. People in Laos, Thailand, Burma and so on celebrate the New Year  according to the Asian calendar. Initially, the water was sprinkled on people to wash away their sins. I heard that some tourists took it up and really went wild. Since then everyone goes crazy with water guns, buckets and garden hoses. Apparently there's no way to stay dry for the next few days. Well, that's what I heard. I'll find out soon. Stay tuned.

    Blog: 2 Wheels - 1 World - 0 Money - 10 April 2010

I got my fingers dirty today, but the bike's in good shape again. It's finally not leaking all sorts of fluids for a change. Really makes parking more convenient, since I don't have to put an old newspaper underneath the bike to absorb oil and search for a small rock to prevent the newspaper from flying away. I think it also looks cooler. Even Clint Eastwood would look ridiculous if he slowly rode into town, with his hat deep in his face, tied the horse to the saloon and hung a sack around the horse's ass to collect its poo.

This kind of game has been going on day and night, for the last few days. The maniac deadline is tomorrow and I still have lots to do.
