  2. The smiling faces of Laos

    Blog: 501 Places - 28 January 2010

Among my hundreds of photos from a trip I seem to have relatively few of people. I still can’t get over that discomfort of asking someone for a photo, even when they seem happy about it, and often stand back when others are clicking away. As a result there are a number of people we met [...]

  5. 12 Reasons Not to Take the Slow Boat

Blog: Passed Ports: images and anecdotes from our travels - 20 January 2010

The legendary slow boat.  Love it or loath it, all SEA travellers have their tales to tell.  Most seem to loath the boat but to love moaning about it.  We spent some days agonizing over whether to give it a go.  Virtually everyone crossing from north Thailand into Laos takes it.  Each morning the boat, [...]

    Blog: GoBackpacking - 9 January 2010

_ From the Editor: During my trip around the world, there were only a handful of times I didn’t have my camera with me.  Tubing in Vang Vieng, Laos is one of those rare times.  I recently came across this video which captures the experience perfectly:  the lazy river, rope swings, drinking, zipline, mud fights, and [...]Join Travel Blog Success today and learn to build a better travel blog. 9. River cruising in southern Laos: Vat Phou temple and the 4,000 islands

    Blog: 501 Places - 7 January 2010

While the tourist paths of northern Laos are becoming increasingly well trodden, the number of visitors to the south of the country are still relatively small. Those who do make the trip to the areas close to the Cambodian border, dominated by the Mekong and the life that is centred around it, are well rewarded [...]

  10. Daylight robbery at Laos/Cambodian border: not worth the fighting

    Blog: 501 Places - 4 January 2010

I have crossed several borders overland in recent years, and even now there is a strange sense of excitement and apprehension as I approach the border guards. They have it in their power to make life very difficult for someone, and it is always my hope that that someone will not be me that day. We [...]

  11. Vientiane, Laos: A capital city that forgot to behave like one

    Blog: 501 Places - 23 December 2009

I heard much about Vientiane being a very laid back capital where there is little to do for the visitor. After spending over a week in Laos it was hard to imagine anything other than a chilled city as the centre of this smiling, easy-going nation. Happily, Vientiane lived up to its billing, with [...]

    Blog: ally - 18 December 2009

We arrived at Luang Prabang airport on the smallest plane in the world…at least it seemed that way until we saw the smaller plane that Lao airlines were flying from Vientiane to Luange Prabang when we landed.  We flew Bangkok Air which is a serviceable enough airline.  Being a ATR70 (that’s code for IT HAD [...]

Yesterday we had our first massage in India. It was a memorable experience and you can read about it here. We had the full body Ayurvedic Massage will therapeudic oils. I am sure that we will be having more as we go through our travels. It made us think about the other memorable massages that we have had on our past travels. We love getting a massage, it is a luxury that we cannot afford to have regularly at home, so we take advantage of it wherever we go. Some experiences have been better than others and some stand our in our memories better than others.

  14. The Only Good Mouse Is A Reading Mouse

    Blog: ally - 4 December 2009

It’s hard to sum up our first two days in Luang Prabang. It’s an exceptionally pretty little town; an elegant melange of Asian and colonial influences. We began the morning observing the Tak Bat ceremony outside our guesthouse during which the faithful offer a small amount of sticky rice to each passing monk; a tradition [...]

  15. A Little Fun…My Three Best Kept Travel Secrets

    Blog: A Little Adrift - A RTW Travelogue - 29 November 2009

There’s been a little movement throughout the travel community – an attempt to unite travel bloggers and create a list of the most unique travel destinations and secretly amazing places to visit. Nellie over at Wild Junket nominated me to participate in Tripbase’s “3 Best Kept Travel Secrets,” and that’s a pretty hard task because there are some amazing places out there. But there are a few places and experiences that particularly stood out in my mind as I backpacked around the world: 1) India’s Festival of Color, Holi Holi ...

  17. Destination, Vientiane Laos

    Blog: Canada's Adventure Couple - 27 October 2009

It was a long bus ride from Hanoi, Vietnam to Vientiane, Laos. We shared it with packaged lobsters, 8 other travelers, some rice and other produce. What do you expect for peanuts? I don't know if I could handle the ride today, but a few years ago, armed with leftover sleeping pills prescribed from my doctor for an overactive thyroid, we managed to make it through many epic bus journeys.

    Blog: Canada's Adventure Couple - 22 July 2009

One of the top things that I just had to see when traveling to Laos, were the Pak Ou Caves. I had seen an episode on Don't Forget Your Passport years ealier, and I had wanted to go their ever since. It is a sight definitely worth seeing. Located just 25 km outside of Luang Prabang, you can hire a boat to take you there for the day or take a Songthaew which is what Dave and I did.

  24. Day 5 - Valentines Day in Luang Prabang

    Blog: Hello, Pineapple? - 10 July 2009

Preface. Today begins 4 months earlier at the train station in Florence, Italy. EZ and I were waiting patiently in the main hall for our platform to be announced for the train that would take us to Venice. Our train was delayed and there was some confusion in the hall as to what was happening on the tracks beyond the station. There were a number of muffled messages, in Italian, over the stations public address system, but nothing we could decipher. Suddenly, after one such public address a mob of people started to charge the ticket booths.

    Blog: barnz2k : Vegan Nomad - 6 July 2009

I hate tablets. Pills. Vaccines. Drugs. They are expensive, have bad side effects, are full of crap I really don’t want in my body (both chemical and animal derived), almost certainly tested on animals, treat symptoms rather than the cause, and in many cases are simply ineffective! On my first big RTW trip, I had [...]
