Hi all

Me and my partner will be arriving in Laos in late October and are looking for first hand suggestions on places to see/things to do in Laos.

As the post title suggests we have a maximum of a month to work with but can cut shorter if we're unable to fill the time - without just hanging around!

We like trekking, learning to cook local foods, historical sites and temples, nature so if you have any advice or suggestions we'd love to hear them.

We'll also be arriving from Myanmar by air -…

Hello my dear friends,

I am writing for help. I am arriving Ubon Ratchathani Airport on Sep 30 around midday, my questions are:

1) is it possible to arrive Pakse in the afternoon?

2) What is the most efficient way to Pakse from Ubon Airport?
3) I have to leave Pakse on Oct 4 afternoon/early evening, is 4 days enough to explore Champasak roughly (temples ...)?

Thank you soooooooooooooo much in advance!!!
Sincerely
Cynthia

I am always stumped by the malaria issue- there seems to be a ton of different kinds of advice...the question is if in mid-October in Luang Prabang and north to Luang Namtha and surroundings, is this anywhere near a malaria-scare? Any experience with this? Thanks!

Wondering about how long and how difficult this journey can be. We are talking about windy roads , quite a ways and probably all these minivans that fill up with chickens, odds and ends and ad-hoc chairs in the aisles?

Would appreciate some input- as we are no longer "hardcore backpackers" like we once were but have gravitated to "mid-range" budgets in our late fifties- we might just be tempted to splurge on hiring a car and driver for the route----costs and suggestions? Thanks!

Hope to do a…

Hi guys

I only have a week this time and am torn between the two loops. I did Bolaven Plateau around five years ago and it was fantastic. Anyone done both and can offer some insight? Tipping the Thai loop is going to feel less remote (only basing this on the fact that there was next to no traffic on Bolaven when we did it, and over the years I've never seen roads in Thailand anywhere near as sleepy as Laos). Both appeal to me and i guess it's a good problem to have!

Cheers
Adam

I am heading from Chang Rai into Northern Laos in the last week of September. I realise I am at the tail end of the wet season but I am keen to do some trekking. What night time temperatures should I expect in Luang Namtha? Are northern destinations like Luang Namtha still easily accessible at the end of the wet season?

Would love some input from experienced people in the area...

We are a couple in our late 50's well-traveled and experienced in East Asia travel. Arriving for a 3-22 October visit to North of Vietnam and Laos. Trying to get my hands around if- and to what degree and where- I should be looking to get a reputable car with driver, and if and where public transportation (including taxis)- or indeed flights at times- might be best.

Itinerary not yet set, but this one suggested by a knowledgeable…

We are a couple in our fifties traveling to northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Sapa, others) and North Laos (Luang Prabang and others) for 21 days in October. Looking to purchase one guidebook, mostly for the background information and enrichment, as well as some tips and suggestions. Which is best to buy- is it the Lonely Planet? Rough Guide? Others? Thanks.

I'm planning a trip to Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. I plan to do cross the border Laos-Vietnam by vehicle and would like to know about the transportation options between Laos and Vietnam.

  1. Where are the points that I can cross the border?

  2. What are the best options regarding quality of routes and personal safety?

  3. What is the route of the bus ? What are the start and end points? How long it will take me?

  4. Is there an option to take private driver from Laos to…
